Important GLP-1 Safety Information

Read this before starting or changing a GLP-1 medication. It does not replace the medication guide that comes with your prescription.

Boxed warning: risk of thyroid C-cell tumors

In rodent studies, GLP-1 receptor agonists caused thyroid C-cell tumors. It is not known whether these medications cause the same tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), in humans.

Do not take these medications if you or a family member has ever had MTC, or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).

Tell your provider before you start if you:

  • Are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy

  • Have kidney or liver problems
  • Have type 2 diabetes with diabetic retinopathy
  • Take insulin, a sulfonylurea or any other medication that lowers blood sugar
  • Have a history of an eating disorder

Get medical help right away if you have:

  • Severe stomach pain that will not go away, with or without vomiting, or pain that spreads to your back
  • A lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing or shortness of breath
  • Swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing
  • Symptoms of low blood sugar: shakiness, sweating, confusion, fast heartbeat or dizziness
  • Severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea, or signs of dehydration

In an emergency, call 911.
