GLP-1 Medication Injection Instructions
Step-by-step instructions for safely giving your GLP-1 medication as an injection under the skin, whether your prescription is a vial with syringes or a prefilled pen.
Always follow the specific instructions from your Health Haven Clinics provider for your individualized treatment plan. If anything below does not match your prescription, call us at (832) 504-5443 before you inject.
What’s in your package?
- GLP-1 medication (vial or pen, depending on your prescription)
- Insulin syringes or an injection pen
- Alcohol pads
Before you begin
- Check the beyond-use date (BUD). Do not use any medication past its BUD.
- Verify your dose. For pens, follow the instructions in your prescription box. For syringes, confirm your dose using the unit markings on the syringe and your dosing protocol.
Step-by-step injection instructions
1. Wash your hands and prepare the site
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
- Choose your injection site: the abdomen (at least 2 inches from the belly button) or the thigh (front or outer side, middle third).
- Clean the site with an alcohol pad and let it dry.
- Rotate injection sites weekly.
2. Prepare the medication (vials only)
- Clean the vial’s rubber top with a fresh alcohol pad.
- Pull the syringe plunger back to draw in a small amount of air.
- Insert the needle into the vial and push in the air.
- Turn the vial upside down and withdraw your prescribed dose.
- Remove air bubbles by tapping the syringe and pushing gently until a drop appears at the needle tip.
3. Give the injection
- Clean the injection site again with alcohol and let it dry.
- Pinch a small fold of skin.
- Insert the needle at a 90-degree angle until it is fully in.
- Push the plunger slowly and steadily.
- Remove the needle and apply light pressure with a cotton ball if needed.
Injection site guidelines
- Abdomen: inject into the soft fatty tissue, avoiding scars, bruises and the belly button area.
- Thigh: inject in the front or outer thigh, at least 4 inches above the knee and 4 inches below the hip. Avoid veins, scars and bruises.
- Rotation: alternate between the abdomen and thighs to reduce irritation.
Injection tips
- For prefilled pens, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions included in your prescription box.
- Rotate sites weekly to minimize discomfort and improve absorption.
- Dispose of syringes and pen needles safely in a sharps container.
